Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker
  • 1 Mixing bowl large
  • 1 spoon for stirring

Ingredients

Marinade

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp minced fresh ginger
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into bite-sized pieces

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper finely chopped
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper, ginger, and salt. Add the chicken pieces, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and jalapeno, sautéing until fragrant. Stir in cumin, paprika, and salt. Add tomato sauce and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in heavy cream and continue to simmer until sauce thickens.

Cooking

  • Transfer the marinated chicken and sauce to a slow cooker. Stir to combine. Cook on low for 6-8 hours until chicken is tender and flavors are well melded.

Serving

  • Once cooked, stir the chicken tikka masala and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot over basmati rice or with naan bread. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired.

Storage

  • Let the dish cool to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.

Notes

Pro Tips: Use fresh spices for a more robust flavor. Marinating overnight enhances the taste. Stir occasionally during cooking to prevent sticking.
Ingredient Substitutions: Use coconut cream for a dairy-free option. Chicken thighs can be used instead of breasts for juicier meat.
How to Serve: Serve with basmati rice or naan for a traditional experience. Garnish with cilantro for added freshness.
Storage & Freshness: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
Make-Ahead Tips: Prepare the marinade and sauce ahead of time and store separately. Combine and cook when ready.
